How to Tackle in Football

March 1st, 2009

Tackling is all about momentum. To make a proper tackle in football, the key is to lunge through the ball carrier while wrapping him up.

1. Position yourself so that the ball carrier is in front of you.
2. Before the impact, make sure that your knees are bent and your hips are low.
3. When the ball carrier is within your reach, push off with your feet as hard as you can, and use your legs to drive through the ball carrier’s body.
4. Wrap your arms tightly around the ball carrier’s waist or legs. If you wrap them up at the shoulders, they can easily stiff arm to break your tackle.
5. As you tackle through the ball carrier, lead with your shoulder, not with your head/helmet!!! As this can cause serious injury or death.
6. Keep pushing and driving with your feet until the ball carrier goes down.
7. Also if you want to cause a fumble get head up(put your face mask on the ball, usually your coaches will teach you this) on the ball to try and knock it out.
8. DON’T STOP UNTIL THAT GUY IS ON THE GROUND AND THE WHISTLE IS BLOWN!
